Pure automation is rarely the right answer at the start. The most resilient designs let humans handle ambiguity while the machine handles the repeatable parts. Over time the boundary moves, but only as confidence accumulates.
Make the boundary visible
Workflows should make it obvious which steps are automated, which need a human, and why. Confidence scores, approval queues, and clear rollback paths reduce anxiety and accelerate adoption.
Evolve with evidence
Track interventions. When a human consistently approves the same suggestion, the system is ready to move that step toward automation. When they consistently reject, the model needs more signal or the policy needs adjustment.
